Poet & Spoken Word Artist Rupinder Kaur To Release Poem To Commemorate Amritsar Massacre Centenary
Poet and acclaimed spoken word artist Rupinder Kaur is creating a poem and performance art piece to commemorate the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, also known as the Amritsar Massacre in conjunction with Author Saurav Dutt.
The poem and visual art piece will be released in conjunction with a commemorative book by British Indian Author Saurav Dutt-entitled
‘Garden of Bullets: Massacre At Jallianwala Bagh’ that will be released in Spring 2019. The poem will be included in the book as well as released as a visual spoken art piece.
Kaur commented: “Working on a poem for Saurav Dutt’s upcoming book — Garden of Bullets: Massacre at Jallianwala Bagh is truly an honour to commemorate this turning point in history. The older generation to the current generation and the generations to come must remember this brutal incident of innocent blood spatters across Amritsar led by General Reginald Dyer.
Jallianwala Bagh massacre led to a direct increase in resistance against British imperialists marking a landmark for azaadi, freedom. Giving rise to revolutionaries like Udham Singh [who later shot Michael O’Dwyer dead who was the Lt. Governor of Punjab at the time of the Jalliawala Bagh massacre]and Bhagat Singh along with leaders beginning to demand for Purna Swaraj — complete independence. It was the moment when India awoke and said no more.”
Rupinder Kaur is a Birmingham born Panjabi poet and biomedical science student with an immense love for South Asian arts. She sees writing and reading poetry as a way to liberate the soul andto share her passion of Punjab through her writing,through her most recent project Rooh Panjabi.
